Here are the reasons why do I choose Taiwan (Part 2) and what I have found after two years lived in Taiwan.
FOODS (The Price of Various Meats)
- Chicken < beef < pork (variants fish types)
- We have warteg right? IDR 5k–10k get full of rice, veggie, and side dishes😃
- Pork < chicken < beef < seafood
- Have warteg, but the approximate price is IDR 25k. That is the lowest, people call it biandang (便當/Taiwanese lunch box), we will get 3 types of veggie, 1/2 side dished, and rice 😃
Historical Sites (Museum, Observatory, and Temple)
- Only in several cities and sites are well-maintained
- Big gap between international & domestic foreigners entrance fees
- Special students fee provided
- More convenient and well-maintained
- Mostly free or cheap entrance fees both for international and domestic visitors
- Special students fee provided
Entertainment (Theaters and Night Market)
- Theaters and shopping malls provided affordable prices for any socio-economic class
- Night market is opened ONLY on a special occasion with visitors from lower-middle-class
- Theaters and shopping malls provided affordable prices for middle-upper class
- Night market is opened every day with visitors from any socio-economic class
Public Transportation (Bus, Train, and MRT)
- Bus and train stations are starting to connect it with some cities (cannot be access generally), not clean and well-arranged generally in a super busy situation
- People are allowed to drink and eat in any public transportation
- Bus, train, and MRT stations are connected to one another building, clean and well-arranged although it is (super) busy
- People are NOT allowed to drink and eat in some public transportation (MRT and THSR – fast train)
Society (Manners and Mindset)
- Social group principal (Gotong Royong)
- Basically friendly to domestic or foreigners visitors
- Will not scold strangers when they make mistakes in public (for e.g.: throwing trash carelessly in a wrong dustbin/garbage classification)
- Excited to see and greet foreigners (especially Western society)
- Line up properly in public places (including public transportation) only exists in some cities
- Individual principal (Yourself Matters)
- Basically friendly to domestic or foreigners visitors
- Will scold strangers when they make mistakes in public (for e.g.: throwing trash carelessly in a wrong dustbin/garbage classification)
- Excited but often end up with shyness to see and greet foreigners (especially Western society)
- Line up properly in public places (including public transportation) are everywhere
- Starting to treat people equally although there are some social discrimination toward different ethnics
- LGBTQ society are strongly prohibited (it is a taboo issue)
- PDA (Public Display Affection) couples mostly can be seen in Taipei, a city where it is “OK” to do that, such as Jakarta and Bali) 😕
- Politeness shows through their manners, attitude, and behaviors in social life – different cities have a different standard of being respectful and tolerant (still there are the social principal – your matters are mine too)
- Treat people equally although there are some social discrimination toward different ethnics
- Welcome LGBTQ society warm-heartedly (Taiwan will be the first country who legalize same-sex marriage in a couple years)
- Politeness shows through their respectful and tolerant society (individual principal – take care your own matters)
Mental health issue and Difability (different ability) access (Accessibility and Acceptance)
- More educative campaign and community activities about the equal opportunity of difability
- More psychology information updates from workshops, seminars, and conferences in some cities (mostly only held in Jakarta – In English or Bahasa Indonesia)
- Lack of access for difability might cause a dependent life to be freely move
- Negative stigma about the mental health issue and/or any difability types still exists in public (such as autis, gila, possession by an evil)
- Honestly, never saw any educative campaign and community activities about the equal opportunity of difability as they treat people equally
- Less psychology information updates from workshops, seminars, and conferences (only in Chinese although they said international) 😞
- Difability-friendly cause an independent life to be freely-move (bus drivers always stop the bus and assist difable passengers to walk in by wheelchair or anything)
- Never heard any negative stigma about the mental health issue and/or any difability types still exists in public (such as autis, gila, possession by an evil)
Beliefs (Openness to Personal Options)
- Follow religions – Indonesia known with its slogan Unity in Diversity, due to there are various ethnics, races and religions/beliefs in Indonesia
- Religions/beliefs blend with cultures – traditional Chinese culture, Fujian, Taoism, etc
Walking Direction and Animal Caring (Equality and Disciplinary)
- If we walk forward we supposed to be in the left side and on the contrary
- Cats and dogs are treated like a pet and even sometimes being mistreated😕

- Cats and dogs are treated like babies (they put them in a baby stroller)
- Nanny and housemaid are everywhere (as the fee also affordable for middle-upper class)
- Keep your trash in your pocket until you find a dustbin (only sometimes)
- Be grateful to finish the food and not over consume anything exist only in some families
- Self-service! Everything must be done by ourselves (as the fee only affordable for the upper class)
